The Homesick Military Spouse

Homesickness is a real and raw feeling, and an especially hard for those brand new to military life. I never imagined leaving my hometown, but when I met my now husband I knew I needed to be with him.

When I left home for the first time, the homesick feeling set in quickly. I am incredibly close with my family and it took a long time to realize that this would have to be the new normal.

I knew I had to bloom where I was planted because while Texas will always be home, this Military journey allows me to experience new homes with my little family.

Most military families move every 3-5 years, sometimes a few states over, and sometimes an entire ocean over.

There are times where I long for home, especially this time last year. I just had our baby, and missed my family more than ever. My husband gifted me a Texas Homesick candle for Christmas, which was the next best thing to home. The smell encapsulates Texas so well, and I love having a little touch of Texas even when mixed away!

Fast forward this year, I was reached out by Homesick candles to help spread awareness Giving Tuesday promotion. With every 10 candles sold, they are sending 1 to a US soldier that’s deployed. 

Something I never even thought of is how perfect this candle would be for those overseas. Being deployed is hard, especially when you have someone waiting for you. I had to return the favor to my husband and get him a Utah candle, for when he’s homesick.

While often times you hear home is a person, not a place, it is normal to miss what you’re used to. As Military Spouses we learn to adapt, but I’d be lying if I said I don’t get sad and miss where I’m from.

Whenever we miss home now, we can just light our candles and be reminded that we are making a new home everywhere we go.

Having a piece of home in our new home helps, and this can go for a lot of things. I am a collector so to say, and I love having pieces of furniture, family pictures, and memories all throughout our house.

Missing home is normal, remember they are missing you too! You can never call your mom too much, be there for milestones of your siblings, and let it be known that you are always welcoming company!
