Now that the wedding chaos has subsided, you are faced with the reality of the military life.
This may be your first time away from home, or maybe you’ve been on your own for a bit. Either way, adapting to this new way of life will be new to you.
I moved to be with my soldier at the age of 18, uprooting my entire life, and packing my things into boxes. When we got to our new home, it was weird to say the least. That empty room soon fill up with your belongings and knick knacks to make it feel more like yours. Your best friend is no longer just down the street, and you are now surrounded by girls who are in the same position as you, or by seasoned spouses who are on their fourth or fifth PCS now.
This new adventure is exciting, albeit a little scary, but this is where you are building your new life for the next few years! Unpack some boxes, and get out and explore your new home. Find your new favorite eating spots, places to walk your dog, anything to get that normalcy back.
When your spouse comes home and they start speaking military lingo, be patient. One day PT and ACUs will be phrases you say too.
You’ll have some trial and error with making friends and may catch yourself having to listen to drama. You will find a few great souls who will just get you and love to keep you company. Sometimes these friends remain lifelong pals, and it is okay to have a small circle!
But, I promise: you will be just fine. You get to experience new beginnings and your new future together! While the Military life can sometimes be unpredictable, have a few things you can hold on to. Do you plan on working? Going to school? Starting your family? Create a plan and this will give you at least a bit of control. Being in this lifestyle, sometimes makes these plans difficult, but I promise spouses are doing it or working around it.
I have found a way to work from home full time, go to college online, and have been blessed with the sweetest baby. All while experiencing several moves, a deployment, extended trainings, and anything else you can imagine.
This life will be tough on you, don’t let it break you and your marriage. You will have to work on ways to nurture it while being thousands of miles apart, or even if you are sitting in the other room.
The military will be tough, but you are tougher! Embrace the new lifestyle and stay optimistic. You got this.
