Best Picture Ideas for Instagram Moms and How to Take Your Own Photos!

Hey Instagram mama! If you came across this post while looking for new picture ideas for your Instagram, you came to the right place! Whether you are just starting out your page, or have been on Instagram for years, it can be difficult to be creative sometimes.

Instagram sounds SO easy on paper. Like you just take pretty pictures? Ok then… But if you are on Instagram as a creator, you know this is NOT the case! There is so much that goes into an Instagram post. The concept, goal, photo set up and execution, caption, hashtags, engagement… So let me help you with the photo set up and execution stage!

So don’t stress. I have compiled my favorite posts with my littles AND I am sharing all my best tips and tricks! (spoiler alert: I take almost all of my own photos!)

My favorite Instagram poses with my kids

Candid shots

These are my personal favorite because they are SO easy.

How to capture:

Choose where you want to take your photo. I chose my couch and I propped my phone up in front of us on the coffee table. I set a timer for 10 seconds and held both girls in my lap and started tickling them. This is my favorite way to capture genuine smiles and feel less “posed”. So while the capture was set up, the picture was real!

On the bed

How to capture:

For this image, I had to make my bed (real honesty here!) and choose outfits that would complement the environment. My concept was capturing mom life, so I chose leggings and a sweatshirt and kept her outfit casual too. I used my camera for this picture and set it up on self-timer, and capture several photos in a series. I posed and before it was captured, I told her to say “cheeeese” and this is what we got!

In a comfortable environment

How to capture:

When working with kids, I have learned the best method for capturing photos is to work around them! I love getting photos in their playroom and around toys. This really helps children feel comfortable and not looking at the camera. I captured these by setting my camera on self-timer and just joined in on their fun!

Classic Garage Photo

How to capture:

This picture idea I feel is an Instagram mom staple. It makes for a simple setup and is great for outfit photos with your little one. My girls have learned to love posing against walls, doors, garages haha. So this is an easier photo to capture for me! My husband was behind the camera on this one, attempting to get a good shot of us all looking. 2/3 isn’t too shabby 😉

Adding in props

I personally love posing with props and setting up a photo! (Perhaps that’s the Marketing Director in me?) The details in your photo can make a huge difference. For this photo, I opened my laptop next to me, grabbed a mug that matched, and moved my plant in the frame. I used my phone self-timer and just talked to her while it captured a few frames. I love how natural it looks and her little pose!

Feeling more confident in your ‘gram, mama? Let me leave you with some tips for these instagram mom picture ideas!

Candid > Posed is the way to go. Your children are beautiful, real humans. Show their personality and don’t worry so much about getting a certain shot! It’s nice to have an idea of what you want like I showed above, but the more real-life you make it the happier your kiddos will look!

My next tip is to shoot at optimal times for your kids. I know most photographers will tell you to shoot at certain times of the day, that’s true for kids too. I will never again attempt photos if they are hungry or tired! Taking photos after they eat, or a few hours after a nap has been ideal for us.

Keep the environment relaxed. Trust me, I know how stressful it can get when you are down to the wire and have a deadline. BUT, keep photography from feeling like a chore to your kids and it will get the job done quickly. Keep things fun, talk to your kids during photos, and play music!

My last tip is to invest in a tripod and remote. It takes the stress off of you and it allows you to stay engaged with your kids. This will also keep you from having to run back and forth to get the shot.
