Birthdays. Anniversaries. Independence Day. Thanksgiving. Christmas.
Even if some of these holidays aren’t that important to you, they still feel lonely when your spouse isn’t there.
Some years you get lucky, and others the military has other plans and needs to borrow your spouse.
Being faced with your service member gone can be difficult. Your family might wonder out loud “they can’t just come home? Why do they have to be gone on Christmas”, like we have a say in this. They mean well, and honestly you’ve probably already asked yourself this too.
Alone for the holidays has a different meaning when you technically have someone to spend it with, but thousands of miles separate you.
As a Military spouse, being told “well get used to it” might be the least helpful advice, so here is what I want to say to you.
Make traditions. And adjustments.
When they are home, make the most of that day. Be in the moment, capture a few photos for memory, and make traditions.
Same goes for when they aren’t home! Make a game plan for what you will be doing that day and keep yourself busy!!
I work full time now and take care of my little one, so wherever you are at in life throw yourself into it 100%. When my husband was deployed two years ago, I threw myself into my school work and it kept me sane. Have whatever you’re doing help keep your mind busy and give it your all.
I know these times will be hard, but it’s not permanent. It’s part of the sacrifice we all have to make in this Military world, and you are definitely not alone. If you have friends where you are, join in on holidays together! Friends will be your saving grace.
Personally, I head home to family any chance I get and being surrounded by loved ones helps ease the distance. I know it won’t always be an option, so in the meantime I take advantage!
Keep your service member involved as much as possible. Remember they are the ones missing the holidays, so find ways to celebrate. Give a phone call if you can, themed care packages, send a letter sharing your favorite holiday memory together… Keep the holiday spirit alive for everyone.
