Stop Cold Messaging! The Right Way to Gain Customers on Social Media

Cold messaging is so, last year (and let’s be honest, it wasn’t okay then either).

Now, this isn’t a post to bash cold messaging, but a way for you as the social seller to understand WHY they don’t work and HOW you can get customers without them.

Cold messaging refers to (typically) copy and paste messages to someone you have never messaged with before, and immediately inviting them to join your team or buy your product. Ever open a message with a “hey girl!” as the first line? That most likely ended with a cold message tactic. Now on paper, it sounds like a great strategy. Send this to 50 people that are in your target audience and maybe 1 or 2 replies back interested, then you get a customer! But, what if instead of a 4% success rate, you could have a 90%?

Cold messaging is not connecting. Let me say that again. Cold messaging is not connecting. It is a lazy way to get your customers, and here’s why. You haven’t even connected and learned about them yet! What if your product isn’t the right fit for them? Or more importantly, you’re not fixing their problems because your message was so generalized?

Customers need connection. You are probably thinking “well Amy, my message is a way I’m connecting…”. NO. Your message is all about YOU and not enough about them. If you want to send them a message, connect on a personal level first.

This is why your social media content, engagement, and presence is so key to being successful. I want you to think of how many people sell your same product, and how you can be different. This is why having a micro-niche is so key to your business. People will buy from you, once they know you. Your page needs to be a great snapshot of who you are, what you do, and if you have a business: how your product is serving you.

People are visual on social media and want to see it in action, not be told they need to buy something (especially blindly). For comparison, that is like a stranger coming up and asking “will you marry me?”. You don’t even know them!

Now, I see some of you getting creative and asking a simple question “what do you do?” after complimenting them. It seems genuine, but then when you jump right into “oh you should join my team and make six figures!”… It leaves the reader feeling hurt. Listen to your audience and get to understand them. Okay, so how?

By your followers commenting, clicking your links, responding to your stories, or the holy grail of messaging you privately. Having your followers come to you is a more authentic way to build your sales and maintain a great relationship, too. Now I’m not saying this just happens because you stop cold messaging. You have to HUSTLE and understand social media marketing. Give customers a call to action, show how your products solve a problem, give a tutorial on how to use your product, and most importantly the value in your business!

I know it can be intimidating to rework your business model. I challenge you all to try this for a minimum of one month. Things don’t just happen overnight, and habits take about 28 days to stick. Being consistent and showing up in all forms to your followers is going to be a game-changer for your business.

And, it will make you feel way more proud in your business and ditch the negativity with the “hey girl” method. I also encourage you to switch the mindset of your inbox. Would you rather it be filled with your attempt to contact people, or with real connections and followers coming to you?
