Making Friends in the Military Community

Sadly we can’t just get away with knowing last names and shake hands like the soldiers do.

Totally kidding, but I have found it to be quite the challenge to find friends in this military community! It doesn’t help that I am extremely introverted and have had the same friends since the third grade back home. When we first moved, I suddenly felt there was a huge weight on my shoulders.

Now while it’s totally okay to have friends outside of the military life, it’s nice to have someone who you can relate to. Someone who you can talk deployments, training, Tricare issues, and anything of that sorts with. Building up friendships will help make this life feel less lonely, and it’s never a bad idea to surround yourself with some great people. I have made such great connections and friendships in this military community, and it’s with people I would’ve never had the opportunity to meet had they not been in the military life too!

I had no friends and I had no idea how to make friends. Maybe you are extremely introverted too, or maybe you are outgoing but are still struggling. Either spectrum you are on, here are great ways to meet friends in the military community!

1. Mom Groups/ MOPS

Moms groups or MOPS (Moms of pre schoolers, generally open for any age) are my saving grace. I have finally found a group of ladies that I can relate with, and not have to have a Military related conversation with. You can meet with other women just like you and talk about your kids to break the ice! It’s a win win and takes the edge off making friends. Your community will normally announce the groups, but you can also look into where they are held online. If there isn’t one, you can be the leader and start it up!

But what if you don’t have kids?

2. Dog Play Date

Have a dog that needs socializing? Or maybe it’s really you that needs a friend? Organize a doggy play date! Another great way to make friends is to find fellow furry friend lovers. Ask around who has a friendly dog who wants to go on a walk or to the dog park. 9 times out of 10 you will find someone who is up for it.

3. Social Media

This is my go to because hello, us military spouses are stationed EVERYWHERE. I recommend joining Facebook groups that pertain to you. Whether it’s “Your base” Spouses Group, Army Wives focused, or even more specific like Military wife and student… There is a group of all of us out there. I will say a big warning is to steer clear of the drama filled groups. Online seems to be a breeding ground for catty comments and inappropriate language. So choose the group wisely! Instagram is where I found my very best military spouse friend (she of course was the one to reach out.  I wasn’t lying when I said I am an introvert lol!) You will find your soulmate somewhere out there I promise! Sometimes you get lucky enough to be stationed in the same place as them!

4. FRG or Base Events

I know for a lot of people, FRG events are strongly avoided. I have had nothing but good experiences at ours, and it’s been a great way to get to know people in your spouse’s unit! At least giving it a shot once shows effort ha ha, and you can see if it’s for you! Who knows, you may just meet your best friend.

5.  Host or Attend a Party

It’s no secret that the military community is home to many direct sales consultants. If you sell something or see someone who is hosting a party, do it! As long as the sales isn’t pushy, this is a great way to network. (And getting makeovers doesn’t hurt!) This doesn’t even have to be a sales party either. You could host a new to the neighborhood barbecue, game night, netflix party, you name it! You will definitely find your tribe and get some friends who have similar interests as you!

 

Whether you are going to try one or all of these tips, my biggest piece of advice is to be you. Don’t give into the drama, be friendly to everyone, and find people who bring out the best in you! Your tribe is out there, whether they are next door or in another country. Welcome to the military life. ha ha!
