Oh, hashtags! Have you ever made a post on Instagram with a perfect photo and caption, but it’s not having the reach it deserves? You may need to utilize hashtags!

Hashtags on Instagram have had a lot of controversy on if they are even worth it, or if they even hurt your Instagram posts. I love the insights feature because the proof is in the pudding!

Here is just one example of my post being heavily impacted by the utilization of hashtags, it would look quite a bit different if I didn’t use them!

Now, you are probably thinking okay I will add in hashtags like #momblog and be good to go, thanks. ✌🏻 WELL, your post is going to be competing with 7.7 million others using that same hashtag. If you are a mom blogger or social media influencer, let me teach you the hashtags that can be your best friend!

Hashtags are a way to reach outside of your existing audience and network and connect with others within that hashtag audience. Hashtags allow your posts to end up on the discover page, or when the hashtag is searched. When using hashtags on Instagram, I recommend using only relevant hashtags to your photo or message you are trying to share! I would refrain from using a hashtag on your social media that doesn’t fit the audience you want to reach, which goes back to knowing your target audience (which you can read here!)

Do you know what is most important about the hashtags I listed above? NONE of them are in the millions. This means your potential of reach is that much better!

How many hashtags should I use?

I recommend 30, and here is how I would do it. Take from the hashtag lists above. Use a few from each or use all from one of the paragraphs. But ALSO, I want you to add micro-niche hashtags. For example, if you live in Texas, use #texasbloggers. If you sell makeup, try #mommakeup. Add in hashtags that will speak to your audience, so when they find you through hashtags they will want to STAY with you.

Any last advice?

Instagram and its algorithm can be tricky, so I recommend you to save these into your notes for the next time you post on Instagram, and add a few that are larger (in the millions) and a few that are smaller (I’d say under 10k) to really find your tribe and see what sticks. I keep a running list of hashtags I use for different posts I make in my iPhone notes app and it is the most convenient way to store them all to be readily available for me!
