Hi everyone! I had the awesome opportunity to have this blog post featured on At Home with Kristyn Cole. I am so excited to share this with you on my page as well.
Cleaning my brushes was always an unwilling chore for me. I dreaded having to do it… But let’s be real. Have you seen how expensive brush cleansers are?! I’m sorry but I don’t even spend $30 on my own shampoo, no way am I about to do that for my makeup brushes! So, I found a cheaper, more natural solution. Have you ever tried reading the ingredients list of a makeup cleanser? (hint, I don’t understand any of those words) Here is how I clean my makeup brushes using only 2 ingredients.

That’s right. Two ingredients! I first fill a bowl with ½ cup of warm water in it. Then I add equal parts olive oil and Dawn dish soap. Dawn is super gentle and makes me feel comfortable cleaning my delicate make-me-look-good’s (aka my brushes). You can use however much is needed, if you have a bigger brush collection, but for me 1 tablespoon is the perfect amount. I don’t bother mixing it because my brushes will do that for me.
Just a tip: I start with my smallest brushes because if I started with my larger ones, they tend to soak up more and won’t leave much for my smaller brushes.
After concocting my DIY brush cleanser, my technique is to swirl the brush in a circular motion, pressing down slightly on my bowl. I then rinse it with warm water, while swirling it in the palm of my hand.
Don’t know how to wash a beauty blender? Don’t fret, it is easier than you think. With the remainder of my mixture, I dab my blender in it and allow it to soak it up like the sponge it is! I then run it under warm water and keep squeezing until the water runs clear. Warning: it is pretty gross to see how much dirt and makeup your beauty blender can hold!
After rinsing I lay it to dry on a washcloth and fold one side up so the brushes are more propped up and can dry without one side drying flat. Don’t be discouraged because it takes some time when you first do this, but after a few times you’ll become a pro and get a system down.
Are you someone who never washes your makeup brushes? Because this totally used to be me, but let me tell you, you need to be washing them. It’s advised to clean them once a week and clean your beauty blender after every use! Raise your hand if you didn’t know that either! I honestly don’t do this, but I also don’t use my makeup brushes every day. I am lazy and often times just use my hands, so I end up washing my brushes about once a month. There you have it ladies! My secret and inexpensive way I clean my brushes.
